Blinds & Curtains

To give your room an instant makeover, you should consider updating your blinds and curtains. Different window furnishings can have a major effect on the general appearance of your room or conservatory.

Different types of Blinds

Roller blinds are a common type of blind. They are fairly basic, very practical and long lasting. As these blinds are simple, easy to use (just pull the cord) and very durable, they are excellent for rooms such as the bathroom where window furnishings need to withstand high levels of humidity. Venetian Blinds are horizontal slats that are lowered using a cord. You can adjust the amount of light that comes into the room. This makes them very practical for an often used room such as a bedroom or living room and provides an attractive modern look. Vertical blinds are similar to venetian blinds but use vertical slats that can be twisted to allow varying levels of light into the room. These are well suited to rooms with large windows. In addition to these main types of blinds, they also come in a variety of different textures, colours and materials such as metal, wood, cloth or plastic. This means you will be able to find blinds to suit your own existing room decor.

Types of Curtains

Pencil pleat curtains are a very common type and consist of tight folds that resemble a row of pencils. Tab top curtains are fitted onto the rod with tabs creating a more casual look. Whilst eyelet curtains are slotted through the curtain pole creating an attractive gathering.

Ready made or made to measure?

There are also decisions to be made in regard to whether to purchase ready made or made to measure blinds. Ready made blinds have the advantage of being generally cheaper. Some people buy ready made blinds and then customise them themselves by cutting them to size. However, this does require some DIY skills. Although not quite as cheap, made to measure blinds are still very affordable and are generally of a superior quality. They are available in a much larger range of styles, textures and colours and because they are custom made, are a perfect fit. This is also true for ready made curtains and made to measure curtains fitting.

Professional or DIY?

You should also consider whether you wish to have a professional fit your blinds and curtains or use your DIY skills. DIY can save you money and if you have some DIY experience, have some spare time and are fitting relatively simple blinds such as roller blinds, this may be a good option. However, other blind styles are much more complicated to fit and may require the help of an expert. In addition, it may be helpful to seek professional help if your windows are not of standard size.

Blinds or curtains?

Although both blinds and curtains can provide your room with a fresh new look blinds can provide many advantages over curtains. As well as providing a modern, clean and fresh look, they can make a room appear bigger as they let more light in. Additionally, there are no poles or tie backs required creating space. Blinds are more economical as they are generally a great deal cheaper than curtains, require less maintenence and are more durable.
